“I kept putting it off year after year, and while not really knowing how important it was,” said Danielson, the Colorado rider who will be among the overall favorites in the Amgen Tour of California that begins Sunday. “Looking back on it, it’s definitely a life-changing experience. It’s enabled me to see really well in every condition. That’s something I never really had before.”

Denver, Colo.—Tom Danielson, Garmin-Barracuda pro rider, will host the Colorado High School Cycling League CycleFest fundraising dinner Saturday, May 5, in Denver. Funding is critically important to help the Colorado League finance its work of providing mountain biking opportunities for high school students.

The annual CycleFest Weekend includes a dinner and auction on Saturday, May 5, at Ponti Hall in the Denver Art Museum. On Sunday, May 6, the very personable Tommy D will host a bike ride and lunch at Pasta Vino Boulder.

Danielson was the top American in the 2011 Tour De France and placed 4th in the 2011 USA Pro Cycling Challenge. He holds records for the Mount Evans and Mount Washington hill climbs and was a collegiate champion while attending Fort Lewis College in Durango, helping establish a cycling scholarship there, and advocated for the 2012 USA Pro Cycling Challenge to hold a stage in Durango.

Tom is a devoted ambassador for youth cycling and said, “I think mountain biking is a great platform to get into the sport of cycling. Programs like the Colorado High School Cycling League are huge for the future of the sport. I’m thrilled to support its fundraising efforts to increase access to the sport of mountain biking for more kids.”

At 7 p.m. in late February Stephanie and Tom Danielson were running late. The couple and their 22 month-old son Stevie were driving home to Boulder after a delayed flight from southern California where Tom had been training. In about twelve hours a film crew would arrive at their house to shoot Tom, the top-finishing American in the 2011 Tour de France with eighth place, for a good portion of the day. As they neared the Rocky Mountain foothills, Stephanie thought, “I have a couple of hours to get everything ready.”

First race in 2012 for former winner

Tom Danielson returns to Le Tour de Langkawi where he will lead the Garmin-Barracuda outfit, nine years after his overall win with Saturn.

“This race is close to my heart. I made my career there,” commented Danielson, who had only just made the switch from mountain to road riding when he won the race at the age of 25 in 2003. This performance allowed him to build his career with top teams Fassa Bortolo, Discovery Channel and now Garmin.

“Danielson is now established as one of the world’s best riders for stage races,” the chief operating officer of Le Tour de Langkawi Emir Abdul Jalal said. “We’re honoured that he remembers Malaysia where it all started for him. His strong showing here in 2003 paved the way for him to join the world’s best teams. It’s also an important sign of faith to us that Garmin-Barracuda has decided to come back this year. We were the first organizers of a UCI H.C. race to invite them when they stepped up to Pro Continental level in 2007.”

American to begin season next Friday

Nine years after he won the race as part of the Saturn squad, US pro Tom Danielson will line out in the Tour de Langkawi next Friday motivated to ride well.

“As I’m talking now, I feel very good and I think I’ve had a good off season,” the Garmin Barracuda rider said, speaking to VeloNation in the lead-up to the race. “Personally, I’m in good shape, but I don’t know what kind of shape everyone else is in. I don’t think I’ll be creeping there, but it’s the first race and there are so many unknown factors.

“But, yeah, I’d like to perform well and contend for the race. That’s for sure. It’s a beautiful race. Let’s just put it this way…I’m not going to fly all the way to Malaysia to sit around in the peloton. If I can place well, then I will, for sure.”
