8.20.12: Tom takes King of the Mountains Jersey on stage one of USA Pro Challenge, Tyler wins the day
TELLURIDE, Colorado (VN) — Tyler Farrar (Garmin-Sharp) sprinted to victory in stage 1 of the 2012 USA Pro Challenge on Monday.
Garmin seemed intent on taking the opener one way or another, via breakaway or a sprint, and a big break went away early in the 125.7-mile stage from Durango to Telluride, containing nearly two dozen riders.
“I’m pretty familiar with today’s stage,” said Danielson.”I told everyone it would be a hard start, an opportunity for us to mess it up. Team director Charly Wegelius said, ‘Let’s take it to the race, cause a split, make some chaos.’ And it almost worked.”
8.15.12: Velonews: For Danielson, a homecoming in Durango and on Flagstaff
By Matthew Beaudin, Velonews
TELLURIDE, Colorado (VN) — Four days. That’s all the time Tom Danielson took off the bike when he arrived home in Boulder after crashing out of the Tour de France last month. Since he got back on, his focus has been singular; his focus has been on Colorado.
“Tommy D,” as he’s known across the sport, finished eighth at the 2011 Tour de France. A few days after a hard crash into Boulogne-sur-Mer in July, he finally fell victim to the Metz Massacre, and hopped a flight home early. His shoulders were separated and his Garmin-Sharp team was in shambles after crashes struck during the Tour’s first week. Danielson could hardly stand to watch.
“I was more than bummed. I had a really hard time with it. I was really frustrated. Every day. I really wanted to watch the Tour, but I couldn’t deal with it,” Danielson told VeloNews. “I would just be so excited to watch the Tour, because I love the Tour and I love bike racing. But then, I would almost leave for my ride right afterwards just super depressed and frustrated and upset.”
8.8.2012: Velonews: After time trial dominance, Garmin ready to suffer for yellow
Garmin’s Danielson said the team’s effort Wednesday was “amazing.”
“This morning, we got together and we were pretty bad. And then we got in the race and everybody just knew what to do. I felt that we rode a really fantastic race,” he said. “At some points we were just so good. We just got to certain points where there really wasn’t any panic.”
Vande Velde and Danielson’s perch on the GC puts Garmin in a strong position. “We want to win the race,” Danielson said. “That’s a great scenario,”
6.29.2012: Velonews: Tommy D one of nine North Americans to watch in this year’s Tour de France
With his second consecutive podium in the Amgen Tour of California and seventh overall at the Tour de Suisse, Tom Danielson is on the rise after an early season derailed by a hard crash at the Tour de Langkawi.
His eighth place finish in last year’s Tour — his first — showed that the 34-year-old still has what it takes to perform at the top. He was Garmin’s highest-placed GC rider in a dream Tour that included a week in yellow and two stage wins for Thor Hushovd, a team time trial win, a July 4th stage win for Tyler Farrar and top spot in the teams classification.
05.20.2012 – Podium for Tom at the Amgen Tour of California
Los Angeles CA — Tommy D secured his second consecutive podium spot at the Amgen Tour of California with a solid ride on Mt Baldy finishing less than 30 seconds after stage winner Robert Gesink. Overall, Tom finishes 3rd, just 54 seconds behind Gesink.
Danielson was proud of the way his team raced, despite coming into the race with three leaders and coming away without the overall win. "The team rode to the plan from start to finish. We really wanted to win the race. We had a very young team that had to support three leaders (himself, Zabriskie and Andrew Talansky), they rode above themselves. Take note of Alex Howes, Jacob Rathe, they were phenomenal. We owe our opportunity to be on podium to them.
05.12.2012 – Danielson among favorites for Amgen Tour of California
Sacramento Bee – by James Raia – Santa Rosa.—After riding and crashing and periodically winning bike races around the globe for a decade, Tom Danielson had had enough. He realized he’d likely do better if he could see where he was pedaling.
So about 11/2 years ago, Danielson had the lenses in his eyes replaced.
“I kept putting it off year after year, and while not really knowing how important it was,” said Danielson, the Colorado rider who will be among the overall favorites in the Amgen Tour of California that begins Sunday. “Looking back on it, it’s definitely a life-changing experience. It’s enabled me to see really well in every condition. That’s something I never really had before.”

04.12.2012: Tom to Host Colorado High School Cycling League CycleFest
Denver, Colo.—Tom Danielson, Garmin-Barracuda pro rider, will host the Colorado High School Cycling League CycleFest fundraising dinner Saturday, May 5, in Denver. Funding is critically important to help the Colorado League finance its work of providing mountain biking opportunities for high school students.
The annual CycleFest Weekend includes a dinner and auction on Saturday, May 5, at Ponti Hall in the Denver Art Museum. On Sunday, May 6, the very personable Tommy D will host a bike ride and lunch at Pasta Vino Boulder.
Danielson was the top American in the 2011 Tour De France and placed 4th in the 2011 USA Pro Cycling Challenge. He holds records for the Mount Evans and Mount Washington hill climbs and was a collegiate champion while attending Fort Lewis College in Durango, helping establish a cycling scholarship there, and advocated for the 2012 USA Pro Cycling Challenge to hold a stage in Durango.
Tom is a devoted ambassador for youth cycling and said, “I think mountain biking is a great platform to get into the sport of cycling. Programs like the Colorado High School Cycling League are huge for the future of the sport. I’m thrilled to support its fundraising efforts to increase access to the sport of mountain biking for more kids.”
04.08.2012: Stephanie Danielson, hub of Team Danielson
At 7 p.m. in late February Stephanie and Tom Danielson were running late. The couple and their 22 month-old son Stevie were driving home to Boulder after a delayed flight from southern California where Tom had been training. In about twelve hours a film crew would arrive at their house to shoot Tom, the top-finishing American in the 2011 Tour de France with eighth place, for a good portion of the day. As they neared the Rocky Mountain foothills, Stephanie thought, “I have a couple of hours to get everything ready.”

2.21.12: Cyclingnews.com: Danielson leads Garmin-Barracuda at Le Tour de Langkawi
First race in 2012 for former winner
Tom Danielson returns to Le Tour de Langkawi where he will lead the Garmin-Barracuda outfit, nine years after his overall win with Saturn.
“This race is close to my heart. I made my career there,” commented Danielson, who had only just made the switch from mountain to road riding when he won the race at the age of 25 in 2003. This performance allowed him to build his career with top teams Fassa Bortolo, Discovery Channel and now Garmin.
“Danielson is now established as one of the world’s best riders for stage races,” the chief operating officer of Le Tour de Langkawi Emir Abdul Jalal said. “We’re honoured that he remembers Malaysia where it all started for him. His strong showing here in 2003 paved the way for him to join the world’s best teams. It’s also an important sign of faith to us that Garmin-Barracuda has decided to come back this year. We were the first organizers of a UCI H.C. race to invite them when they stepped up to Pro Continental level in 2007.”

American to begin season next Friday
Nine years after he won the race as part of the Saturn squad, US pro Tom Danielson will line out in the Tour de Langkawi next Friday motivated to ride well.
“As I’m talking now, I feel very good and I think I’ve had a good off season,” the Garmin Barracuda rider said, speaking to VeloNation in the lead-up to the race. “Personally, I’m in good shape, but I don’t know what kind of shape everyone else is in. I don’t think I’ll be creeping there, but it’s the first race and there are so many unknown factors.
“But, yeah, I’d like to perform well and contend for the race. That’s for sure. It’s a beautiful race. Let’s just put it this way…I’m not going to fly all the way to Malaysia to sit around in the peloton. If I can place well, then I will, for sure.”

1.31.12: Tom Teams Up to Promote STAAR Surgical’s Visian ICL Procedure
World-class cyclist proves competitive advantage in most difficult of sports
MONROVIA, Calif. (January 31, 2012) — Top U.S. professional cyclist Tom Danielson and STAAR Surgical Company – maker of the Visian ICL implantable lens for correcting nearsightedness – have teamed up after his best year of performance results on the world circuit.
Danielson had the Visian ICL procedure last year to correct his 480/20 vision. The procedure provided Danielson better than 20/20 vision, and has helped elevate his performance substantially in one of the most physically and mentally demanding endurance sports. He said the procedure proved that the superior product of Visian ICL can endure the toughest conditions, making it great for active lifestyle athletes.
12.30.11: Tom takes the 2011 Pro-Cycling Passion Prize
Most fans adore winners and some glorify underdogs; it’s a surer bet to cheer on athletes who win repeatedly or aren’t expected to win. In professional cycling, no one remembers second place – except maybe a certain Luxembourger.
When high expectations surround a young athlete and he doesn’t meet them entirely, some fans feel disappointed and turn their attentions elsewhere. If this athlete then pulls off several stunning performances in a season, the same fans renew their love for him. It makes me wonder if fan fickleness frustrates athletes. When a person gives his heart to an endeavor, it could be hard not to take things personally.

Tommy D has had a fantastic 2011 season. Finishing 9th overall in this year’s Tour de France, as well as third overall in the Tour of California are the highlights so far.

8.8.11: The Denver Post: Cyclist Danielson overcomes setbacks to fulfill role as Lance’s successor
By John Henderson
The Denver Post
BOULDER — It’s Tuesday and Tom Danielson is nine days removed from cycling around France faster than any other American. Now he’s cycling up Independence Pass as eager as any cyclist alive. He took his wife, Stephanie, and 16-month-old son Stevie to Aspen to recon one of the hardest and highest climbs in European and North American cycling. He was more hyper than a teenage mountain biker on Red Bull.
He checked every contour of the route. He gauged the lightheadedness of cycling at 12,095 feet. He even marveled at the mountain goat and beaver he saw by the roads.
Admire his Team Garmin-Cervelo’s first- place team medal in the Tour de France? Read the press clippings of his breakout top-10 finish? He’ll save that for when he’s riding a wheelchair instead of a racing bike.
Colorado’s inaugural USA Pro Cycling Challenge is Aug. 22-28, and Danielson is the favorite. The Fort Lewis College graduate and Boulder resident is coming home to a world stage.
“It’s funny, he has not relaxed a moment,” Stephanie said. “You think, OK, he can take a breath now, but it seems to have inspired him even more.”
8.4.11: Tom speaks with 9News about US Pro Challenge
8.4.11: Cyclingnews.com: Tom motivated for USA Pro Cycling Challenge
Focused Grand Tour contender outlines two key ascents.
“I’m very motivated for the race,” Danielson said. “Just finishing my first Tour de France, I couldn’t tell you exactly how I am going to feel in the race. I don’t know physiologically what will be going on with my body in August. Mentally, I am fired up and motivated. I love racing in Colorado and in the US. To be called one of the favourites is an honour and I hope that I can put that weight on my shoulders and perform highly in my home state.
“When I heard the announcement of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge, immediately it was on the back of my head and I got so excited,” he continued. “Here I am in my cycling career and I always dreamed of doing a hometown race, a big race. The feeling that I get from competing on my home roads, on the terrain that I am built for, high-altitude climbing, I love it. When we started talking about it over the winter and fall I made it a target on my calendar. I didn’t know what path I would take to get to the race but I wanted to make sure that I arrived in the best possible condition.”
7.24.11: Tom claims 9th overall at first Tour de France, and is the top American. Garmin-Cervélo wins team classification
“We’ve had a great Tour but we’re most satisfied in the way that we did it,” said Garmin-Cervélo manager Jonathan Vaughters.
“This team is about teamwork, sacrifice, working as a unit, and that’s exactly how we rode this Tour. We came in with high goals and I think we’ve reached all those and more. We did it by working together and staying focused.”
Vaughters carried a cut-out, life-sized photo of Dave Zabriskie when the squad appeared on the podium for finish-line ceremony in honor for the American, who crashed out in stage 9.
Tyler Farrar kicked to fourth in the final-stage sprint Sunday as the Tour roared into Paris after completing 3,430km during 21 hard days of racing. Mark Cavendish won the final stage and Cadel Evans claimed the yellow jersey.
Tom Danielson was happy to arrive in Paris with a solid overall performance that saw him in ninth place at 8:15 in what was an excellent Tour debut.
“I was able to avoid the crashes that took out some of the other GC contenders and I came to this Tour with great legs,” Danielson said.
7.23.11: Tom secures top-ten with solid time trial
“It’s a dream come true. To be in the top 10 at my first Tour de France, I can’t believe it,” said Danielson.
“The team has been so great, we have had an amazing Tour. I have to thank the guys, and Jonathan and Robby Ketchell for everything they’ve done for me here. And if we’re lucky enough to end up as the best team, that shows what a team effort the Tour de France is and how beautiful our sport is. I couldn’t be happier.
7.22.11: Gutsy performance on Alpe d’Huez keeps Tom in 9th overall
Tom puts in a solid ride on stage 18 to solidify his top-ten in the overall.
Consistent riding and smart tactics have benefited Garmin-Cervelo and Tom in particular this entire Tour de France. This continued on the final climb up Alpe d’Huez as Tom rode within himself to secure his position on the general classification.
Ryder Hesjedal rode well as did Christian Vande Velde to gain even more time for Garmin-Cervelo as the top squad for the Team Classification.
Next up is the individual time trial which should suit Tom well. Currently in 9th place overall, a top-ten placing heading into Paris on Sunday would be fantastic result for the Tour rookie.
Let Tom know you’re pulling for him and wish him well as he heads towards a great result and the Champs-Élysées!
7.20.11: Race report: Tom carries top-10 hopes into Alps
Tom Danielson rides into two decisive stages in the French Alps with hopes of defending his spot in the top-10 overall at the Tour de France.
Garmin-Cervélo defended its lead in the team ranking in Wednesday’s 179km 17th stage from Gap, France to Pinerolo, Italy. Norwegian Edvald Boasson Hagen won the stage out of a big breakaway and Thomas Voeckler defended yellow.
Danielson crossed the line 30th at 4:53 back and ceded 27 seconds to some of the top GC rivals, but was able to defend his grip on ninth place overall.
“If I can get through this Tour in ninth or 10th, or whatever it is, I just want to give my all,” Danielson said. “I am excited about the Alps and the final time trial. I just have to recover from today and move forward.”
Garmin-Cervélo rode to protect Danielson leading up to a short but steep second-category in the closing kilometers. Danielson survived the harrowing descent to the finish line without major mishaps.
“I took it cautious on the downhill. Basso stacked it on a corner and I went into him. That opened a gap between us and the others, then Voeckler crashed ahead of us, and that opened up more time,” Danielson said. “We all worked together and we just lost a handful of seconds at the finish. I got down it in one piece, that was my goal today.” Read More
